North Carolina Senate pushing for a North Carolina medical malpractice cap

The Senate will be meeting to try to pass North Carolina medical malpractice reform legislation without the House. This is the first time that one house of the North Carolina General Assembly will hold a session without the other. If the Senate passes North Carolina medical malpractice reform legislation, the bill will sit until the House returns in May 2004. Republicans continue to blame large jury awards in lawsuits for the increase in doctors’ medical malpractice insurance premiums and are pushing for a $250,000 cap on awards on pain and suffering. Opposition to the North Carolina medical malpractice reform believes it only hurts people that are not suffering economic losses.
