$1.5M Settlement Reached in Medmal Suit
2008-08-18
A man living in Tennessee recently received $1.5 million in a settlement stemming from a medical negligence suit he filed.
The suit was filed against the man’s doctor and the corporation that he works for, Madison Clinic Corp.
Doctor Ignores Patient’s Symptoms
Michal Derrick was a former patient of Dr. George E. Thomas and was under his care for bypass surgery.
The surgery took place at the Regional Hospital of Jackson and after the procedure was done, Derrick reportedly went back to see Thomas experiencing fevers and chills.
Thomas claimed Derrick just had the flu, but week later he was admitted to the Baptist Hospital in Nashville due to severe pain.
Infection Found Cost Man his Leg
Doctors at Baptist Hospital found that Derrick had a severe infection in his leg, which forced them to amputate it.
“When I got to Baptist Hospital, they said I was nearly dead from the infection,” says Derrick. “They said it was either life or limb.”
Derrick filed the suit against Thomas and his medical group for negligence claiming he should have been aware of the deadly infection that was causing his health problems.
