Hepatitis C Scare in Nevada

A clinic in Nevada has recently been linked to several patients becoming infected with hepatitis C.

Health officials have announced that 40,000 more patients of the clinic should be tested for the virus as well as for HIV since the recent findings of this hospital malpractice.

Reports of Infection

According to reports, six people who underwent surgery at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada are now infected with the blood-borne hepatitis C virus.

After an investigation was conducted, health officials determined that “unsafe injection practices related to the administration of anesthesia medication might have exposed patients to the blood of other patients.”

The virus is thought to have spread throughout the clinic when staff members were reusing syringes and used single doses of anesthesia medication on multiple patients.

Warning to Previous Patients

Health officials are warning previous patients of the clinic, those who were administered between March 2004 and January 2004, to be tested for both hepatitis C and HIV.

“We are recommending all patients during this time frame to get tested because we cannot determine which patients may have been exposed,” says Lawrence Sands, chief health officer in Nevada.
